What causes those little white spots on your fingernail?

This happens to me once a blue moon; I get a tiny white spot at the base of my fingernail (near the cuticle) and it just kind of stays there and grows out with the nail itself. It doesn鈥檛 hurt or anything, it just looks kind of silly. Mom thought it had something to do with calcium intake but she wasn鈥檛 sure if that meant too much or two little. Dose anyone know what causes this? I鈥檓 just curious. What causes those little white spots on your fingernail?
White marks in finger nails are quite common and are usually caused by a knock on the nail. This could be caused by trapping your finger or accidentally hitting the nail on something. Usually these marks will grow out with time and there is no need to worry.

However the spots could be caused by a number of other things too such as an infection. Sometimes you can pick up a fungal infection while having a manicure or even from the gym. The way to find out if this is the cause of your problem is to ask your GP to take a sample of nail tissue. If you have got an infection they are reasonably easy to treat.

Another condition that could cause white spots on your nails is eczema. So if you do have eczema and you have just found white spots on your nail, it is more than likely that it is the eczema that caused them.

Of course it could always mean that you are lacking in vitamins such as Zinc but that will have to be determined by a dermatologist or your GP.What causes those little white spots on your fingernail?
Bruses.
They are calcium buildups inside the nail.. Its from too much....but its not life threating or anything so no worries but yea
You need calcium or potassium. Go eat a banana!!
it means you like someone..lol or so we thought in 3rd grade.lol
I think that when you bump, pinch or otherwise hurt a finger nail that it shows up on a fingernail from time to time. I get those white spots all the time because I work with my hands a lot. When I was a kid we use to play a trick on other kids. We would have them put both little fingers in their mouth and bite down kinda hard on the nails for about 15 seconds. After 15 seconds we told them to remove their Little fingers, lock them together and pull as hard as they could. It stings fairly good when you do that and then it leaves those little white marks. That's why I figure that I get my share of those also. They don't last long and go away .
