What is the half moon on your fingernail called and what's it purpose?

It must have some purpose, right? What is the half moon on your fingernail called and what's it purpose?
The whitish, half-moon shape at the base of the nail is called the lunula.

If nails are brittle, soft, with no shine or half moon, it can be an indicator of hyperthyroidism. Any color differences or unusual lines in the lunula can also show a lack of iron in the body or other manifestations of liver, kidney, lung or hear diseases. For example: a deep red lunula and pale nails is associated with congestive heart failure. In patients with Wilson's disease (a liver defect that leads to copper overload) the lunula can turn a blue hue (azure lunula). Also, use of the antibiotic tetracycline, which is frequently used to treat acne, can turn it yellow. What is the half moon on your fingernail called and what's it purpose?

We have so many beautiful scientific answers, allow me to delve into the arena of the esoteric. In chiromancy/palmistry, a half moon on the fingernail denotes a stressful situation you have suffered as of late. Each finger has a different connotation and the half moon on a particular finger can show the area of your life in which you have been suffering the stress.
It's called a Lunula, and it doesn't serve a purpose other than what the nail serves. It looks different because of what it is. When the nail is formed, newer cells are pushed together and compress to form the common nail shape. The white part is simply newer cells that havn't gone through the flattening and shaping phase yet.
it's the lunula... and it's the most active growing region of the nail and as the nail develops, it slides forward over a layer of epithelium called the nail bed with which the nail is attached to the finger
lunula is the crescent shaped whitish area of the nail bed (when visible). It has a primary structural role in defining the free edge of the distal nail plate (the part of the nail that actually grows outward).
When I was quite young, I tried to walk a long way in moccasins. Not smart. I nearly lost my toenails and if I remember right, it had fluid, maybe the fluid that the nail is made out of.
I don't think it is got anything to do with single's and dating.

Secondly it occurs for people who have less vitamin in their body.
I don't know what it's called but believe it or not it's an air pocket and it doesn't do anything.
it means that you have a calcium deficiancy.

solution= eat more cheese
Its a lunea I think and it shows calcium in the body.

I think it shows lack of it.
I'm not sure of the technical term, but it's a pocket of air that has no known purpose.
Some crack-pot martial artist think it shows how much chi you have. ^_^
It's a sign that your body is lacking in calcium
I don't think anybody really knows. Maybe its a second nail? i have absolutely no idea.
i don't have one of those lol so im guessing itz useless or maybe it does have a use but somtimes its hidden
wish i could help. All i can say is look it up on google.
no...i dont think so...and some fingers dont have it?
