Can I trim my kittens nails with regular fingernail clippers?

Actually, the fingernail clippers meant for (human) babies? Or do I need to buy special clippers for cats? Also, how much do I cut?

Thanks! Can I trim my kittens nails with regular fingernail clippers?
yes but be careful they have little nerves that run into their nailsCan I trim my kittens nails with regular fingernail clippers?
You shouldn't use human clippers because cats nails are designed differently from our nails. You can risk splintering in their nails and damaging them if you use human ones.

You can go to any local petstore such as petsmart, or even walmart has cat nail clippers.

As far as trimming their nails goes, place a little pressure on their paw so their nails get outstretched. Look at the nails and do you see the red part inside the nail? That is a part of the nail that you DO NOT want to cut, it could be very painful to your cat.

Once you have the right trimmers, place the trimmer at an almost 45 degree angle or even(parallell) to the floor/ground and cut a but before that red part.

It may be tough at first, but if you make it enjoyable your cats will easily get used to having their nails cut :)
I really wouldn't, since you run the risk of splintering the claw tip. And, human clippers really don't give the visibility you really want to make sure you are not clipping off too much.

Yes, they sell expensive nail clippers, but I have posted a link to a type I use, and it is inexpensive.

You want to snip off the transparent tip of the claw. I typically only take off the very sharp tip, more or less dulling the claw tip rather than trying to really shorten the claw. If you cannot see through the part of the claw you want to cut, you are cutting too deep.
Yes, we use the same clipper we use on our own nails.

There are, however, some clippers that are easier to hold - take a look at what is available on the market.

We've bought other clippers in the past but generally don't know where they are and we just get out own clippers.

I've always though that if regular clippers had a loop on each side for you finger and thumb, they would be the perfect clippers for cat's claws.

They work well but it can be difficult to hold them as you maneuver to get at the claw.
Just the tips. There is a blood supply going through the claw, you can sometimes see it as a pink area. Do NOT cut into that, it hurts awful, and won't stop bleeding.

If your fingernail clippers are dull, they'll squash the claw which means it'll split and fragment, causing pain to the cat. Make sure the clippers are sharp.

I use the clippers on ours every two weeks, front and back claws.
Sure - on small kittens I wind up using the human small nail clippers till they are bigger and the nails are bigger.

Just cut the tips off - most all cats have white/clear nails and you don't want to cut into the red vein that runs down the claw. Clip as needed weekly.
That's what I use, and cut just the tip. You don't want to go all the way down to the pink part (called the quick) that's a fleshy part of the fingernail, and cutting too close is like cutting our fingernails too short! Ouch!
yes! just clip the tips... you can see where there 'toe' is because it is a different color, usually pink. all i ever clip is the sharp ends cuz they grow back quick...
That's fine, just be sure you don't cut into the quick, which is the pink part. Just take the tip off.
